Vuelta al Submarino

In Autumn 2022 I began a collaboration with the Barcelona-based dancer Katharina Löffler. We created a duet performance over a three week period of research and development at Laroc Espai de Moviment in Badalona, a collectively organised space for the creative development of dance/movement artists. For this work I created vocal compositions, using live electronic vocal manipulation. We have performed the piece in November 2022 at L’Occulta cultural centre, Barcelona and in May 2023 in The Rosemary Branch Theatre, London. Our next performance is at Stripart Festival at Centre Cívic Guinardó in Barcelona, July 2023.

Through movement and sound we conjure the “submarino”, a submerged future world that is no longer habitable to humans due to our destructive actions towards the planet and its ecosystems. In this darkly beautiful place we encounter our descendants, human/marine creatures who have managed to adapt to a new, airless world, free from the confining structures that once defined us - gender, social class, property, inheritance, consumerism… These alluring creatures of the submarino, while liberated, are haunted by what came before. They carry the weight of humanity’s history in their muscles, their veins, their bones, their breath, their cries. They cannot forget.
