Gone Under Sea
In 2018 in Mexico City, where I was then based, I started the band Gone Under Sea, who breathe new life into traditional British folk songs through eclectic arrangements. As a singer, arranger and instrumentalist I have toured across 11 Mexican cities/towns and played several London shows with Gone Under Sea. Below you can watch videos from a live session, filmed in Mexico City, showcasing two of our arrangements. "Nottamun Town" is a traditional folk song from the US with its roots in medieval England. Full of surreal images, ethnomusicologists believe that it hails from a tradition of songs that use riddles and nonsense as part of ancient ritualistic magic. "Two Sisters" is a traditional English ballad dating back to before the 17th century. Two sisters live together in a bower; the eldest, jealous of the younger's "lovely face and yellow hair" murders her by pushing her into the sea. A famous harper discovers the sister's corpse and makes a harp "of her breastbone, whose notes would melt a heart of stone". He takes the harp to her father's house and places it on the ground where the harp proceeds to play and sing by itself, revealing the truth of the jealous sister's coldhearted murder. With Emiliano Mendoza on percussion, Belén Ruiz on cello and Misha Marks on guitar.
